Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department proudly serves as a combination volunteer and paid agency. We provide fire & emergency medical services to the citizens of the town of Burkeville as well as the western portion of Nottoway County, Virginia. We also provide mutual-aid fire & emergency ambulance services to all of the remaining portions of Nottoway County.
The citizens, in cooperation with the Town of Burkeville, have provided fire protection services since at least August of 1908. The Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department of today traces its roots back to the Burkeville Fire Department that was in existence prior to August 1908, which is the earliest documented proof of existence. Unfortunately, we are able to document this by a LODD (Line of Duty Death) of a Burkeville firefighter in August of 1908.
Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department began its Emergency Medical Services First Responder Program in 1991. In 2002, the Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department with the assistance of a grant was able to purchase its first ambulance. With its first ambulance in service, Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department began transporting its own patients to Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, VA.
In 2012, we began with contract EMS providers to help cover the Emergency Medical Services calls. Then, in January 2017, Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department hired its very first paid Firefighter/EMT providers. Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department currently employs six full-time Firefighter/EMTs and four part-time Firefighter/EMTs. In addition to the paid staff the department is supported by a staff of 20 - 25 volunteers providing many duties from leadership to support activities.
